Marjanka Jonkers
Abstract Art

Meet the Artist
Marjanka (born The Hague 1975) lives with her husband, four children; two boys and two girls, and dog in Bergen nh, on the edge of the forest, dunes, and sea. Her work is available at Ann Art Gallery in Knokke, Belgium, and in the Netherlands at Sille Gallery in Oudewater. Art Gallery Salon West in Amsterdam represents her at art fairs such as the Affordable Art Fair Amsterdam, Brussels and Stockholm.
Marjanka can now look back on a period of her artistic career in which she clearly sees the defining moments in her creative life. As a child, she lived near the sea in Wassenaar, in the dunes in Bergen aan Zee with her family, and spent summers in flower-filled Ventimiglia, Italy with her mother’s Indonesian family. With her father, she took long, high, spectacular hikes in the mountains of Switzerland and France, where she encountered rocks, formations, rare plants, and panoramic views (her brother became a geologist for a reason).

Academy and University
As a teenager, Marjanka knew she wanted to become a maker. She began at the Fashion Academy in Amsterdam, where she learned to work intensively on multiple projects and develop ideas across disciplines. Wanting to better understand creative processes, she later studied Art History at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in architecture — a field she saw as the ultimate combination of nature, expression, and human living.
Alongside Art History, she studied Philosophy, Cultural Studies, and Museology, while also taking art classes at the Vrije Academie in The Hague, including sculpture, etching, screen printing, and photography.

TECTONICS series
In the TECTONICS series, Marjanka investigates the effect of different layers of material that seem to shift relative to each other like plates. They come together, slide past each other or drift apart. An intriguing image emerges of texture, colour, light, shadow, reflections and lines.
"I believe every artist creates their own world, from an inner world that I envision as a place in the mind and heart where all impressions are filtered and converge into a specific image. This is usually triggered by sensory information. Artists are open to seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and feeling, and experience the urgency to create from there. I certainly know this is true for myself"
