Meet the Artist

Dim Rooker is an artist, creator of social concepts, and designer working both on commission and through his own initiatives. The sea is an important source of inspiration for him. It is no coincidence that he lives close to the beach and that his studio and office are located in the middle of the harbor of Scheveningen.

From there, he has the space and time to work on his own artworks, many of which have a strong connection to the sea. He works with multiple techniques and layers, often combined with objects he finds on the beach. His work is characterized by a distinct graphic and abstract style.

Beachcomber

Dim Rooker, born in 1972 in The Netherlands,
creates mixed media collages that reflect the space and atmosphere of his hometown, Scheveningen.
His raw graphical compositions, crafted from washed-up items collected along the shoreline, infuse
his work with a profound sense of new adventures, evoking the exploration of coastlines and the sea.
Four large boxes containing unidentifiable, sun-bleached items are lined up in his studio, which is
situated in a characteristic red house in the middle of the harbor of Scheveningen. It’s one of the
few original old buildings that remain after the extensive developments in this area. If you’re walking
around the beaches of Scheveningen in the early mornings, there’s a good chance you’ll see Dim
Rooker wandering around, looking for washed-up items.

Sea, Sea, Sea...

The vast sea, connected to the entire world, is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for Dim. “While
surfing, I naturally enjoy the waves, but just as much, I relish the sight of a seagull flying overhead, a
seal surfacing, a jellyfish shimmering in the water, the colors of the sky, and gazing at the horizon.

Each work starts with a horizon and from there, compositions and the notion of depth are created
with layers of different materials, such as paint, fragments of photographs, nautical maps, rope, and
other washed-up items from the shoreline. Contrary to the structured creation process in his applied
graphic design work, each of his artworks results from a series of impulsive choices. In this playful
process, there is no preconceived idea or visual outcome in mind.

Creating art seems to run in their blood. Dim is strongly influenced by his mother, Liza Jazenko, who is half Ukrainian. She spent most of her life as a passionate artist, creating colorful paintings in beautiful locations. In her artworks, she also incorporated objects she had collected
during her travels.

"Looking closer at these materials, I wonder what they used to be, where they’re from, and how long they’ve been drifting around in the North Sea. I collect the items that intrigue me."
